They walked hand in hand towards Cones at the Cove, a gorgeous little ice cream and dessert café in the grounds of the Sapphire Bay Hotel. It had a lovely beachy vibe to the place but Zoey’s favourite thing was the wall of different-flavoured ice creams where people could build their own desserts and add a wonderful range of toppings too.

Kit pushed open the door and they were greeted by a woman in a blue Cones at the Cove t-shirt carrying a baby in a papoose who was fast asleep.

‘Hello, I’m Skye, the manager here at Cones at the Cove,’ the woman said, cheerily. ‘This is my new apprentice, Thomas.’ Skye stroked the baby’s head affectionately. ‘Who quite honestly sleeps all day and doesn’t really pull his weight at all.’

Zoey laughed. ‘You can’t sack him though, he’s too cute.’

‘He does play that card very well,’ Skye said. ‘Now have you been to us before?’

‘I have, with my mum a few weeks ago,’ Zoey said.

‘I haven’t,’ Kit said.

‘OK, would you like me to give you the guided tour or…’

‘I can show him around,’ Zoey said.

‘OK, great, here are two menus. You can choose desserts from there or build your own ice cream sundae from the wall over there,’ Skye said, showing them to a table. ‘I can recommend the mince pie waffles – my husband, Jesse, makes them and they are absolutely divine. Someone will be over shortly to take your order and get you some drinks.’

She left them to it as they settled themselves into a booth.

‘All of their desserts are made fresh here, nothing is bought in,’ Zoey said, opening her menu and then glancing over to the specials board. ‘So you can’t really go wrong.’

‘What are you going for?’ Kit asked, looking down the menu.

‘The build your own dessert. There’s a wall of fifty different-flavoured ice creams over there so you can come in here every week and have different combinations every time. You should see the choice of toppings too. It’s every child’s dream. And as I’m definitely still a big kid at heart, this place is ideal for me.’

‘Sounds fun, let’s do it.’

A waitress came over to take their order. They told her they were going to build their own and then she asked about drinks.

‘What flavoured hot chocolates do you do?’ Zoey asked. Snuggling up with Kit on the beach under the blankets had been kind of cosy for a while but now she needed something to warm her up and the ice cream wasn’t going to do that.

‘We have marshmallow and white chocolate, Christmas pudding, mince pie, After Eight, Toblerone, and we even have a sprout-flavoured one if you’re feeling brave.’

‘Sprouts?’ Kit said, giving a shudder.

‘Eww yes, I’d have to agree. I hate sprouts at the best of times, but I certainly don’t want that in my hot chocolate.’

‘It’s definitely an acquired taste but some people like it,’ the waitress said.

‘I’ll think I’ll stick to the After Eight one please,’ Zoey said.

‘I’ll take the Toblerone,’ Kit said.
